Information on Argentina:
Getting there and getting around

From Ezeiza International Airport, take a registered taxi or a “remisse” to your hotel. You should be charged a flat fee (approximately US$30) and given a receipt. The booth for taxi services is located near the arrival gates at the airport. Under no circumstances should you take a taxi whose driver is not licensed. If someone approaches you offering you a ride, politely decline and proceed to the registered taxi booth.

Whenever possible, avoid taking cabs directly off the street. If you are at the conference venue, a hotel, or a restaurant, have an assistant call you a car from a cab company. This implies virtually no extra cost (less than US$ 2) and waiting times are minimum (10-15 minutes).

The subway system and metropolitan buses are cheap but can get crowded. Beware of your personal belongings when riding public transportation.

Money matters

The Argentine unit of currency is the Peso (ARS). US$ 1 = 3.50 ARS. All prices are quoted in Pesos unless otherwise noted.

You will need local currency for simple transactions (taking a cab, buying lunch). You can obtain local currency at a bank (exchange from 10am to 3pm; extraction via ATM any time of day). Currency exchange brokers abound on Florida Street, a shopping district close to the conference venue. Under no circumstances should you buy or sell dollars on the street to someone offering an exchange.

Many stores accept dollars (although watch for the rates!).
Major credit cards are accepted almost everywhere.
Traveler’s checks may not be widely accepted.

Please note: Beware of counterfeit Pesos! Be very careful when accepting bills for 20, 50 or 100 Pesos. Look for a clear watermark or a thin, metallic running thread on the bills.
